Cycles... 2002 Canadian Consulting Engineering Awards

The 2002 Canadian Consulting Engineering Awards were presented at a gala evening featuring dinner and entertainment on October 26, 2002, in Toronto, Ontario. Hosted by the Association of Consulting Engineers of Canada in collaboration with the Association of Consulting Engineers of Ontario and the Canadian Consulting Engineer magazine, the evening was an inspiring presentation of the best of Canadian consulting engineering projects over the last year.

Winners

Schreyer Award

Lions' Gate Bridge
Consulting engineers found a way to replace the entire suspended deck of Vancouver's landmark bridge piece by piece, while 70,000 vehicles a day continued using the crossing.

AWARD OF EXCELLENCE

1. One Wall Centre
The highest tower in Vancouver is an unusual slender glass structure that uses tuned liquid column dampers to control vibrations.

2. York University Computer Science
Low-tech ventilation and other green design strategies help a building at York University in Toronto reduce the size of its mechanical systems by 50%.

3. Sheppard Subway Tunnels
Advanced boring methods were used to excavate twin tunnels for an extension to Toronto's underground transit line.

4. SkyTrain Expansion
Three firms coordinated the huge and complex work of extending Greater Vancouver's elevated light rapid transit Millennium line.

Award of Merit

1. ICT Building
A new engineering facility at the University of Calgary has a radiant cooling system and other environmentally benign characteristics.

2. Fredericton-Moncton Highway
Engineering firms successfully designed and managed the construction of a major highway across New Brunswick that has 180 river crossings and 89 structures.

3. McLean Bridge Replacement
Conflicting concerns over costs and preserving the habitat prompted bridge engineers to use a new type of concrete girder in Taber, Alberta.

4. Seine Riverbank Stabilization
Engineers used compacted rock columns and bio-engineering to rebuild the site of an aqueduct serving the city of Winnipeg.

5. Creemore Membrane Sewage Treatment
A community in rural Ontario is the first in the province to use membrane technology in a sewage treatment plant.

6. Antamina Tailings Facility
High in the Andes Mountains of Peru, Canadian consulting engineers designed the first concrete-faced, compacted rockfill tailings dam.

7. Red Dog Mine
A close alliance between owner, contractor and engineer brought about the success of a huge project to improve a zinc-lead mine north of the Arctic Circle.

Beaubien Award

Arthur L. Charbonneau, P.Eng., receives the top individual consulting engineer honour.
