2004 Canadian Consulting Engineering Awards
The Canadian Consulting Engineering Awards recognize and celebrate outstanding achievements in the field of engineering.
The 36th Annual Canadian Consulting Engineering Awards were presented at a Gala Awards Dinner on October 28, 2004, at the Fairmont Chateau Laurier, in Ottawa.

Beaubien Award
Benno Ernest Novak. P.Eng. is this year’s recipient of the Beaubien Award, the highest recognition presented annually by the Association of Consulting Engineers of Canada (ACEC) for individual lifetime achievements and contribution to the engineering industry and to the Association.
Mr. Benno Ernest Novak has contributed to the consulting engineering industry and to society as a professional engineer, an international committee member, an urban planner, and an artist and musician.
Mr. Novak is involved actively in the business of the design and building professions. He is a past chair of ACEC, past vice president of the Corporation of Urbanists of Quebec and past president of CEA. He is a Member of FIDIC and an accredited active Peer Reviewer for the American Consulting Engineers Council. He was also a member of both the Edmonton Chamber of Commerce and the Montreal Board of Trade, and sat on the Board of the Alberta Chamber of Resources. He was recently recognized by APEGGA for his contributions through dedicated voluntary committee service work.
A resident of Edmonton Alberta, Ben Novak is a graduate of McGill University in Montreal, initially graduating in Civil Engineering and later obtaining a Diploma in Business Administration, as well as a Master in City Planning from the University of Manitoba. He has also studied project management, public presentation and environmental policy. He has lectured at the undergraduate level in surveying and urban facilities design at the University of Manitoba.
After his first degree Mr. Novak worked in England and Germany in the estimating and design of civil works and in the development of a high-pressure pipe-cleaning device. Upon his return to Canada he first worked for a major oil company before joining a developer of light industrial structures. He went into the engineering consulting field joining a Montreal firm in late 1966, then the consortium for the development of Mirabel Airport as chief planner, groundside. He was promoted to the firm’s operations manager, became involved in the international affiliate of the firm and sat on their Board.
In 1982 he joined the Stanley (now Stantec) organization in Edmonton, first as vice-president, operations, Northern Region, then as senior vice president. He participated in and led a number of acquisition and joint venture initiatives, contributing substantially to growth. Now as a consultant, he sits on affiliate boards, and assists in operations and acquisitions.
Over the years Mr. Novak has published a number of articles and delivered seminars dealing with urban planning, transportation and the business aspects of acquiring and running large and small consulting practices.
Mr. Novak is completely fluent in three languages. He has traveled extensively, including to Europe, Australia, the Middle East and North and South America. He is also a skier, swimmer and golfer. Other interests extend to music, art and design. His artistic media vary from watercolours to pen and ink, with his engineering and planning background lending realism to his work.
Ben Novak has an uncommon background which combines engineering with the arts and enables him to blend beauty with practicality.
