2009 Canadian Consulting Engineering Awards
On November 3, 2009 at the Fairmont Chateau Laurier in Ottawa, the Association of Consulting Engineering Companies (ACEC) and Canadian Consulting Engineer Magazine will be celebrating excellence in the consulting engineering sector at its annual awards gala.
The awards gala is the premier showcase for the significant contribution consulting engineering firms make to our social, economic and environmental quality of life in Canada and around the world.
This year, 14 exceptional projects will be recognized and the firms behind those projects honoured. The evening will culminate with the presentation of the Tree for Life Award for environmental sustainability and the Schreyer Award – the highest honour for a consulting engineering firm in Canada.
ACEC will also recognize Jacques Lemarre, one of the most esteemed leaders in the consulting engineering community, with the coveted Beaubien Award. This is the highest honour bestowed to an individual for his or her lifetime contributions to the Canadian consulting engineering sector.
In a truly special presentation, ACEC and l’Association des Ingénieurs-conseils du Québec will recognize the Province of Quebec for demonstrating vision and leadership through its progressive procurement legislation mandating Qualifications-Based Selection (QBS) for engineering and architectural consultants in 2008.
This year’s entertainment is bound to heat up the room with rhythm and flare. Flamenco dancers will grace the stage accompanied by live musicians displaying what is known as one of the most passionate Spanish traditions. As well this year, we are pleased to have renowned Canadian journalist Judy Van Dusen return as our Master of Ceremonies to oversee the festivities.
The celebration is also a premiere networking event with many members of parliament and industry leaders among the attendees.
ACEC launches “Hill Day” to deliver QBS message to Parliamentarians
On November 3rd, award winners from the CCE Awards Gala, together with the ACEC Board of Directors and staff, will descend upon Parliament Hill to deliver a strong message: invest in a long-term infrastructure program, and select engineers based on their qualifications, not their price.
Meetings will be arranged with Ministers, Members of Parliament, critics and senior staff who are relevant and interested in ACEC’s issues.
By establishing multiple interfaces with all sides of the house on November 3rd, ACEC will be able to build on its existing relationship with parliamentarians and further establish itself as an authority on the role of science and technology in our social, economic and environmental quality of life. It is our intention to maintain an ongoing dialogue with parliamentarians beyond the ACEC Hill Day.
ACEC Celebrates 40 Years of
Partnering with ENCON
For 40 years the Association of Consulting Engineering Companies (ACEC) and ENCON have enjoyed a very special and very productive relationship. ENCON, Canada’s largest underwriter of professional liability insurance for the consulting engineering sector, has been a strategic partner with ACEC - freely sharing its expertise and providing support to ACEC programs.
Through this exclusive arrangement, ENCON has provided ACEC with expert advice and has strongly supported ACEC efforts to promote commercially fair relationships between ACEC member firms and their clients.
ENCON has also added value to numerous ACEC events through its generous financial support that allows ACEC to offer first class programs and presenters.
ACEC will be making a special presentation to ENCON at the 2009 Canadian Consulting Engineering Awards marking 40 years of this unprecedented collaboration. Both ACEC and ENCON are already looking ahead to the future, looking for more ways to support the consulting engineering community in Canada and to provide value to ACEC members.

Canadians make their mark at FIDIC conference in the UK
Nearly 30 Canadians attended the annual conference of the International Federation of Consulting Engineers (FIDIC) from September 13 to 16 in London. The annual FIDIC conference is the largest and most important international forum for the consulting engineering sector - bringing together eminent international speakers representing clients, industry, government, funding agencies, consultants, and engineers. Over 600 delegates and other guests deliberated over how the consulting engineering industry can take the lead in planning and delivering sustainable solutions to the global challenges facing the world's infrastructure. Presentations from the conference can be viewed on the FIDID website at www1.fidic.org/conference/2009/talks.
Canadians play key roles
A number of Canadians played key roles in the conference. AICQ President Johanne Desrochers made a highly anticipated presentation on QBS developments in Canada – including the recent legislation by the Quebec Government. Senior ACEC staffer, Susie Grynol presented the development and evolution of ACEC’s video and student outreach project with association managers from nearly 60 countries at the Directors and Secretaries Meeting. ACEC president, John Gamble served as one of two co-chairs for this year’s Directors and Secretaries Meeting. John has been invited to join the organizing committee for FIDIC’s centenary conference to be held in 2013. Former ACEC Chair Andrew Steeves is also active in FIDIC’s QBS Task Force.
This year’s conference was also special to Canada because it marked the end of Canadian John Boyd’s eventful and influential term as FIDIC president. ACEC hosted an informal celebration with John on his final evening as FIDIC president, attended by the Canadian delegation and leaders of the consulting engineering community from around the world.
Creating opportunities for members
While in London, ACEC in cooperation with the Canadian Government arranged an information session on possible business opportunities in the UK and Europe at Canada House in Trafalgar Square. Presenters included representatives from:
- The High Commission of Canada
- Canadian Trade Commission Service (TCS)
- Think London
- European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD)
This event, arranged specially for members of ACEC, was well attended and informative. ACEC and the Canadian Government expect to organize a similar event for the 2010 FIDIC conference in New Delhi, India.
Young Professionals at FIDIC
The Canadian delegation included four Young Professional (YP) that joined approximatlely 70 other YP delegates at this year’s annual FIDIC Conference. The YP delegates participated in four days of business sessions as well as additional activities designed specifically for YPs. Canadian YPs in attendance included the recipient of the ACEC Allen D. Williams Scholarship Award Kristel Unterschultz, and outgoing Chair of YPFSC Alex Eyquem.
