Sir Ambrose Shea Lift Bridge Replacement

Parsons

Placentia, Newfoundland and Labrador

The 50-year-old Sir Ambrose Shea lift bridge, which connects two adjacent communities in the town of Placentia, had reached the end of its useful life. Parsons was retained by the Newfoundland and Labrador Department of Transportation and Works to replace it. The project presented complex design requirements. The owner required an aesthetically pleasing structure celebrating the community’s local heritage while providing reliable access to a safe harbor for fishermen and boaters. A robust structure was also essential due to the harsh environment. As part of the assignment, Parsons also undertook a condition assessment, structural evaluation, a major retrofit for the existing bridge to keep it in service during the construction of the new bridge.
