St. Croix River Crossing

COWI North America and HDR

Oak Park Heights Minnesota to St. Joseph, Wisconsin

The St. Croix River Crossing not only balances environmental and stakeholder concerns, it provides increased capacity to 55,000 vehicles a day between Minnesota and Wisconsin and significantly reduces delays. The largest public works bridge project in state history, it is the longest extradosed bridge in the United States, crossing the federally-protected "Wild and Scenic" St. Croix River. COWI, together with HDR, were responsible for the main river bridge and associated bridge approach design. The extradosed bridge form, which combines segmental box girder and cable-stay bridge technology, is unique in optimizing environmental and visual footprints while being sustainable and constructible.
