ACEC Engineering student photo contest results!

ACEC believes that today's engineering students are the future of our industry, which is why every year we maintain our commitment to student outreach through annual initiatives and an ongoing partnership with the Canadian Federation of Engineering Students (CFES).

One of the initiatives that ACEC uses to connect with students and promote consulting engineering as a career of choice is through the annual Engineering Student Photo Contest. Launched in 2016 the contest is open to undergraduate and graduate level students and encourages them to think towards the future by posting a picture on Instagram or Twitter with the hashtag #ConsultingEng2B along with a description that details how they will change the world with their engineering degree. Contest winners receive a seat at the Canadian Consulting Engineering Awards Gala including travel and accommodation, as well as the chance to network among Canada’s top consulting engineers and engineering firms.

Dozens of entries were submitted from students all across the country studying in various engineering disciplines. Submissions were evaluated based on a variety of factors including the entries overall impact and ability to communicate consulting engineering’s contributions to society and were judged by members of ACEC’s Student Outreach Advisor Group (SOAG). Made up of professionals from within the consulting engineering sector and ACEC member organizations the group also consults on all student outreach matters.

This year’s winning entry was submitted by Mahmoodreza Karimiestahbanati, a 3rd year PhD student from Laval University studying Chemical Engineering. His entry was praised by the judges for creatively portraying the “juxtaposition between the display of renewable and non-renewable energy sources,” and was deemed it an “interesting reflection” on how “consulting engineering can have an impact on the world.”

“I took this photo in The Hague beach, during my internship in Netherlands this summer. There were many people enjoying sunshine on golden sands of beach; but I was looking far away as an anxious and provident engineer, where fossil fuels were polluting the air. In this photo, wind turbines still seem not developed enough to accomplish a victory in unfair battle with fossil fuels. With my engineering degree, I will try to promote using renewable energies in order to provide the future generations with a pollution-free earth. #ConsultingEng2Be @aceccanada”

We were pleased to have Mahmood join us for the 2017 Canadian Consulting Engineering Awards gala held in Ottawa this October and for him to experience first hand all that the consulting engineering sector has to offer to aspiring engineers. "Attending the CCE awards gala was a great experience for me, it allowed me to familiarize myself with leading consulting engineering companies while at the same time opening my eyes to the opportunities that I will have after graduation. As a student I could only ever dream of the opportunity of meeting the CEO of one of these companies someday-by attending the CCE awards gala I was able to network with multiple CEOs at once!"

Congratulations to Mahmood and thank you to all the students who participated for their inspiring submissions! For more information regarding the 2017 contest please click here.
