ACEC Certificate in Management Essentials

ACEC is excited to launch this professional development opportunity for emerging leaders in consulting engineering.

This online program is ideal for all young professionals and future leaders working in the industry - engineers, technicians, project managers, planners, environmental scientists.

The ACEC Certificate in Management Essentials will allow participants to: 

 Gain a solid understanding of fundamental management concepts

 Acquire meaningful knowledge of the consulting engineering industry

 Develop indispensable leadership and networking skills

 Enhance their professional networks

 Strengthen their interpersonal communications skills

The program is designed and presented by experienced engineering mentors who collectively have over 60 years of consulting experience.

 

Program Details

The program is made up of three modules to allow participants to learn management essentials, apply this learning in a group setting, and showcase their newly acquired skills to senior leaders in the consulting engineering industry.

 

The first module will explore management concepts and theory through online learning. The 2-hour sessions are open to live participation or available through online recordings. The program instructors will deliver 4 separate learning sessions on topics such as:

  • Sales and Marketing
  • Proposals, contracts and scope definition
  • Project planning
  • Motivation & delegation
  • Interpersonal skills
  • Integrity Management

Recordings and PowerPoint presentations for all sessions will be made available to all registered participants.

 

The second module will challenge participants to demonstrate their understanding of the management concepts learned in Module 1.

Working online in pre-assigned groups, participants will answer a case study question on a specific theme developed by the program instructors. The groups will prepare a presentation on their case study that they will deliver in Module 3.

Case studies will be evaluated by the program instructors and awarded a pass/fail grade at the conclusion of the program.

 

Groups will showcase their new skills and knowledge by delivering their case study presentations to a panel of senior industry leaders from the ACEC Board of Directors and ACEC Past Chair’s Council.

This will be an opportunity for participants to enhance their presentation and public speaking skills and interact directly with panel members.

Groups will also receive feedback and evaluation from the panel on the content and delivery of their presentations. 


Certificate of Completion

Once they have achieved a pass grade on the group case study, participants will be issued a certificate of completion by ACEC to confirm the successful completion of the program. This certificate program will assist in Professional Development Unit (PDU) accreditations in applicable provinces.

Meet the Course Instructors

Ben Novak - B. Eng., MCP, Dip B.A.

Ben Novak holds a B.Eng., and a Diploma in Business Administration from McGill University, Montreal; his master’s in city planning (MCP) is from the University of Manitoba. He is a Senior Consultant in corporate management of consulting businesses and a certified FIDIC trainer who specializes in corporate services and corporate management training. He is also an accredited peer reviewer for ACEC (US) reviewing consulting operations’ management practices. For many years he was with Stantec in Edmonton and sat on the first Board of Directors when they became a public company. He has held top positions in several professional business associations. Ben has materially emphasized the need of management training for engineers and other design professionals by making endowments for a specific master level training scholarship at the University of Alberta and McGill University in Canada.

 

Andrew Steeves - P. Eng., MBA

Andrew Steeves has 30+ years with ADI Limited and exp. including front office experience in division management, Human Resources, corporate planning, quality management (ISO registration), marketing, proposal writing, consultant selection and services procurement (PPPs and qualifications-based selection) and client relations (interviews and feedback surveys). Andrew has lectured to consultants on a wide range of topics including profitability, career paths for young professionals, procurement methods and business planning. He is a FIDIC Accredited Trainer and was a mentor on FIDIC’s Young Professionals Management Training Program (the predecessor to FFLMP).
